Police are currently investigating the theft of jewellery from an aged care facility. The theft has impacted on a number of residents, who have now become victims.
Unfortunately, stealing offences are becoming a common occurrence, although this type of offence on our senior and elderly members is more disheartening.
As lifestyles change, the time will come when senior family members may need to move to an aged care facility. If you are in the process of doing this for a parent or family member, perhaps ask yourself, or family:
- Do you have a photo and inventory record of jewellery your family member is wearing at time of admission to the aged care facility?
- Could you look after the jewellery instead?
- Is there a secure and safe storage facility for aged care residents to place valuables?
- Do you know who has access to your family members room or keys to drawers and cupboards?
Police urge families to consider the above, to prevent this from happening to a loved one.
