Last week was Queensland Road Safety Week, which focused on reducing road trauma and educating the community about safety on and around our roads.
During the week, Eidsvold Police visited local schools and kindergartens and talked about the importance of road safety.
Police spoke to the students about being safe when crossing and walking near the road as well as bike safety, wearing helmets and other protective gear when on bikes or scooters.
Police also talked about the students’ responsibilities as a passenger in a vehicle which included wearing their seatbelts and proper behaviour to stop the risk of distracting the driver.
Sergeant Geoff Price said it was great to see students fully engaged in the discussions.
“Police shared plenty of tips and behaviours consistent with being safe on and around the road,” he said.
It was a busy week with Eidsvold Police also conducting high visibility traffic enforcement patrols of the Burnett Highway and local roads.
Police were generally impressed with the behaviour of most motorists however three speeding traffic infringement notices were issued during the weeklong initiative.
A 40-year-old North Burnett woman was recorded at 128km/h on the Burnett Highway north of Eidsvold and issued with an infringement notice for $459 and three demerit points.
A 17-year-old New South Wales man was recorded at 142km/h on the Burnett Highway north of Eidsvold and issued and infringement notice for $1286 and eight demerit points.
A 21-year-old Brisbane man was recorded at 133km/h on the Burnett Highway at O’Bil Bil and issued an infringement notice for $643 and six demerit points.
Sergeant Price said that overall, local police were pleased with the behaviour of the motorists using the local roads; however, the speed at which these motorists were detected is a concern.
“Speeding has a direct consequence on your life and those around you,” he said.
“There is no excuse to be driving at those speeds and it just makes the roads a dangerous place for both themselves and other motorists.”
With Queensland Road Safety Week at an end, Eidsvold Police will continue to be proactive out on the roads conducting high visibility traffic patrols and enforcement.
