Bicycle – ring a bell?

This week you’ll see police officers working across Bundaberg, Maryborough and Gympie Patrol Groups cycling through our state-wide Bicycle Safety Week operation.

We’ll post some daily safety tips and information highlighting some of the road rules applicable to bicycle riders and traffic infringement notices we may issue.

Cyclists and motorists have the same rights and responsibilities when using the road.

Since 6:00am on January 1 and 6:00am on February 15, police throughout the Wide Bay Burnett District have issued the following infringements to cyclists.

January 1 to February 15

  • 23 x Bicycle rider fail to wear helmet
  • 2 x Driver use hand-held mobile phone (bicycle)
  • 1 x Bicycle rider carry more persons than bicycle designed for
  • 1 x Fail to stop at red traffic light (bicycle)
  • 1 x Ride bicycle at night or in hazardous weather conditions without required lights operating and visible

It’s nearly two years since the trial commenced for new cycling rules where a minimum passing distance for motorists was included in Queensland road rules.

Motorists must stay wider of the rider by giving:

  • A minimum of 1 metre when passing cyclists in a 60km/h or less speed zone; and
  • 1.5 metres where the speed limit is over 60km/h.

Here is a reminder for everyone to use common sense, check surroundings and share the road.
