Secure your vehicle

Bundaberg Volunteers in Policing will be out and about tomorrow handing out flyers to local vehicle service and tyre centres, delivering the important message to the community to ‘Lock It or Lose It’.

People might think it’s safe to leave their car unlocked while they pop into a service centre, but opportunistic theft only takes a moment.

Most car thefts are opportunistic, but there are a number of things people can do to reduce the risk of vehicle theft:

  • Always lock your vehicle, including the boot and sun roof, and remember to fully close the windows.
  • Remove keys from the ignition if your vehicle is parked or unattended, even if only for a minute.
  • Remove or place all valuables and personal documents out of sight when leaving your car unattended.
  • At home, don’t leave vehicle keys lying around on tables, benches or key hooks: keep them out of sight.
  • Keys should not be marked with personal or vehicle details. Use your personal property identification code instead.
  • Don’t hide spare keys in the vehicle. Thieves know where to look.
  • Consider using the following to help protect your vehicle: car alarm, immobiliser, ignition shield, steering wheel lock, window etching, microdots or GPS tracker.

Adopting good vehicle and key security habits can help stop opportunistic thefts.
