Bundaberg Police conducted patrols yesterday afternoon in response to an anonymous call of concern from the Avoca area.
A trio of young children believed to be aged five years to 10 years, were allegedly seeking sponsorship for their school. Interestingly, it was the last day of school holidays.
The children did not disclose the name of their school or what the money would go towards.
The resident was quick thinking and asked for proof, in which the children produced a piece of paper that appeared to have been torn from a book with handwriting on it.
It’s alleged the trio were still door knocking a few hours later.
Two of the children were riding scooters and one child was on foot.
Police did not locate the trio and wish to remind the community that if children are unsupervised and knock at your door for alleged fundraising, remember to ask:
- Why aren’t you with an adult?
- Has your school publicly advertised the fundraising initiative?
- Can I donate to the organisation/school online after verifying details?
Regardless of the answers you may receive, times have changed and due to some opportunistic motives by a small number of youth, it’s in your best interest to conduct your own research before handing over cash or inviting the unknown in.
Offer your assistance by:
- Taking a good description of the young person/group
- Noting the time of visit
- Calling Policelink on 131 444 to report suspicious behaviour
- Talking with senior family members to raise their awareness
- Contacting the relevant school to advise of the situation
