With the current travel and isolation restrictions put in place by the Chief Health Officer, there is a noticeable reduction in vehicles using the road network throughout the North Burnett area, specifically the Burnett Highway that travels through the towns of Gayndah, Eidsvold and Monto.
Although the Queensland Police Service (QPS) released a statement regarding a suspension of static (multi-vehicle) roadside breath and drug tests to reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission (see below), this does not mean that police have stopped performing their traffic duties.
Local police in the North Burnett area, and right through the Bundaberg Patrol area, are constantly out on the road conducting mobile traffic enforcement activities.
Acting Sergeant Geoff Price from Eidsvold Police said he has noticed a significant decrease in vehicles travelling along the Burnett Highway, however he has unfortunately noticed an increase in the speed of some of these vehicles.
“I believe this is due to a more open road with less trucks and caravans travelling the highway,” Acting Sergeant Price said.
“Drivers need to be sure that they are paying attention to their surroundings as well as their speed.”
Acting Sergeant Price has issued a number of traffic infringement notices over the past week including a vehicle travelling at 152km/h in a 100km/h zone along the Burnett Highway between Eidsvold and Mundubbera on Monday morning.
Police in the Bundaberg Patrol area wish to remind motorists that despite the current health pandemic, local police are still conducting their core duties which includes traffic enforcement with a particular focus on the Fatal Five.
